Frederick George Chapman
(4). Frederick George CHAPMAN was
born on 19 Mar 1893 in 15 Woodhave St, South Shields, Co. Durham,
England.(1) He was christened
on 17 Apr 1893 in St. Hilda's, South Shields, Co. Durham, England.
He died 1, 2 on
9 Feb 1969 in Allendale, Northumberland, England. The cause of death
was Stroke. He was buried in Allendale, Northumberland, England. He
married 3 Marion Bain
MARSHALL on 6 Aug 1917 in St Michael's, Byker, Newcastle on Tyne, Northumberland,
England. [Parents] [Descendants]
He actually married the girl next door! - his wife lived at 17 Woodhave
St. and he at 15 Woodhave St.
He fought in WW I.
'Freddie joined the Durham Light Infantry (he had a bad chest and wasn't called up until the war situation became desperate - he was the best formally educated in the family, spoke German and was put into the Intelligence Corps.Freddy was captured with all of his battalion soon after arriving in France. He lived on herbs as a prisoner which he collected, brewed and drank, He was one of the few survivors of his group of prisoners. When he returned home after the armistice he was very thin but otherwise unscathed." - Comment made by his sister Sally
After the war, when work was difficult to find,
he planned to emigrate to Australia and persuaded his other brothers
and sisters to go also since most of them could not find work in
the depression.
His mother, and 11 brothers
and sisters left for Australia.
He lived at 57 Cochrane Park Avenue,
Benton until he retired. I remember a house with lots of apple trees
in a large garden. (where other houses seem to have been built now)
At the side of his house there was a narrow lane which ran past a
cemetery (The road has now been changed). He was able to walk to
work.

He moved out of the town on retiring, to Rydal Cottage, Station
Road., Allendale, Northumberland, Eng. He moved out of Newcastle
in the hope of improving his wife's asthma and to live nearer to
my father.
He died of a stroke in 1968 and was buried in Allendale cemetery.
At first the grave had a low stone border but after my grandmothers
death it was changed to a more conventional headstone.
What was he like?
'My Grandfather was a popular man with all who knew him. He could
never do enough to help his neighbours. He had a wonderful sense
of humour. Even as a child I remember him with white hair, It turned
white at an early age, but, he was compensated by never suffering
from any form of baldness. He was the sort of person no child could
resist. I remember the climax of each visit to his home being a visit
to his 'Aladdin's Cave' the garage, where over the years he had accumulated
a copious supply of odds and ends. These he would sift through and
give to me in a brown paper bag. Old alarm clocks, electrical switches,
war memorabilia - gas masks etc. all became my new toys. It was probably
to him I owe my skill at tinkering with and repairing all sorts of
gadgets. '

18th March 1877 Margaret Isabella Foggan dau of Robert & Margaret Foggan Boot & Shoemaker of Bedlington .
See above for a 1904 picture. Margaret Isabella's father died when she was almost two. In 1881 she was recorded in the Census as living with her widowed mother at 2 Seaforth St., Cowpen, (NBL 2 SOUR S112).
After father's death and mother's remarriage she ran away from home and lived with an aunt, Jane Steel (My mother's 'Great Aunt Jane' nee Foggan) in Jarrow The Steel's ran a leather merchant’s shop in Jarrow and had a son Robert of their own. They treated Margaret Isabella as their daughter. She worked at Tiffany's Grocers, Churchton, North Shields where she met her husband who delivered beer there. Robert Steel was very close to Margaret Isabella and on his death left Margaret Isabella £2000 in his will. My Mother reported 'Great Aunt Alice was very jealous.'
She made all her own dresses.
After her husbands death she lived with my mother and father at 237 Chillingham Road in a house rented from my mother's sister Dora. In the rooms downstairs Dora used to teach the piano. The house is now above a butcher's shop. She then lived with her son Jack and finally with her daughter Dora at 7 Sefton Avenue, Heaton, Newcastle.
Died 10th Sep 1953 Cremated West Rd Cemetery No memorial Her son John (Jack) Robert Marr was executor of her will in which she left my mother £2,500. Death registered at Wortley.
